Silicon Valley Races to Train Robots, Starting With Laundry-Folding
Sunday Robotics, Weave, and 1X are all starting with the same core task: laundry. Robotics startups including Figure AI, Sunday Robotics, and Weave Robotics have shown off robots that autonomously fold clothes as a gateway into home automation.

Laundry-folding is a deliberately chosen proving ground: it demands the deformable-object manipulation, spatial reasoning, and reliability that most home tasks require, so mastering it validates whether these robots can generalize beyond scripted demos. The convergence of Figure, Sunday, Weave, and 1X on the same task means we can soon compare them on equal footing. Watch for the metrics that actually matter: success rate on unfamiliar garments, speed relative to a human, and whether any of these move from staged videos into paying customers' homes.
